It gets hotter during the summertime. And the annoying mosquitos are also increasing. A good idea comes to me when I see some popular videos about making a plastic bottle mosquito trap. Maybe I can also make one by myself, cheap and useful DIY mosquito trap. How about you? Do you want to try?
I have found some very useful videos and articles like this popular YouTube videos. It seems not so difficult. So now let’s make a plastic bottle mosquito trap now!
What should we prepare?
I have found most materials easily at home. For yeast, I have bought some from the local grocery around me.
- An empty, plastic 2-liter bottle
- A marker or pen
- A box cutter
- A tape measure
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1-1 1/3 cup hot water
- 1 gram of yeast
- Measuring cup
- Tape (duct, scotch, or electrical are fine)
How to make a plastic bottle mosquito trap?
1 Cut the plastic bottle
Make a mark halfway down the plastic bottle. About 4 inches (10 cm) from the lid of the 2-liter bottle is about half of the bottle. You can use a ruler or measuring tape to find where 4 inches down the bottle is.
Draw a circle around the bottle 4 inches from the lid. And then cut the plastic bottle in half. Remember to cut carefully along your marked guideline until the bottle is in two sections. The two parts of the bottle will be useful for the DIY trap.
2 Prepare hot water and brown sugar
You can measure 1/4 cup of brown sugar for use in the following steps. Then heat up 1-1 1/3 cup hot water.
3 Mix the prepared materials in the plastic bottle
Pour the hot water into the lower half of the bottle and be careful the water is hot. Then add the prepared brown sugar in it. It may take 20 minutes to allow the mixture to cool.
Then it is needed to add 1 gram of yeast to the plastic bottle for the yeast will consume the sugar and produce carbon dioxide. And it will attract mosquitoes.
4 Place the other part of the bottle well
Finally, hold the top half of the bottle upside down and place the top half upside down inside the bottom part of the bottle. Remember that the lid of the bottle should face downwards at this point.
Use tape to keep the edges aligned. A few pieces of tape placed around the bottle will suffice to keep the edges in place.
Now a plastic bottle mosquito trap is made. I have tried to put this trap near the mosquitos. It really works! After several days, there are a lot of dead mosquitos and small insects in the bottle. Then it is time to clean and change the new mixed liquid. So interesting mosquito trap! Want to make it right now? Just do~
